I am in love with octopi! Love how they are so smart and are able to figure out puzzles. “Octopi are Very Sly” is a wonderful book about octopi and their cute antics. Harry is sly octopus who lives in a zoo and is known by all. One day a new octopus joins him and the adventures begin. The characters are engaging and the pictures are beautiful. Great book to teach children about friendship, empathy and octopi!

As a third-grade teacher, I have had the pleasure of introducing my students to countless stories, but Octopi are Very Sly stands out for many reasons. The book has a creative story line and beautiful illustrations. Beyond that, Octopi are Very Sly introduces important themes which force readers to consider the ethical qualms of holding animals in captivity, the role of individuals in solving problems, and enacting change.
Octopi are Very Sly weaves together a cute storyline with a melodic tone. The accompanying vivid illustrations bring Harry’s world to life, captivating young readers and immersing them in Harry’s quest to find happiness, first with his tankmate Suzette, and later in the open ocean free from the confines of the aquarium. The visual appeal of the book not only enhances the storytelling experience but also serves as a valuable tool for visual learners.
Finally, Octopi are Very Sly can act as a catalyst for meaningful discussions about animal ethics. It delicately introduces this topic, providing young readers with a digestible entry point into exploring complex ethical issues. Through the adventures of Harry, the book invites children to ponder the implications of keeping animals in captivity and encourages critical thinking about the treatment of living beings.
Moreover, it underscores essential values such as resilience, creative thinking, and personal integrity. The story showcases how one individual’s actions, in this case the zoologist Terrance, can spark positive change. Terrance’s choice to help Harry exemplifies the notion that one person can make a difference, highlighting the importance of standing up for what is right and paving the way for a better world through compassion. It provides a valuable opportunity for children to engage in empathy-building exercises and reflect on their own capacity to effect positive change.
Octopi are Very Sly is a story that will inspire, educate, and enchant readers of all ages.
